National History Academy: Gunston Hall and Lorton Workhouse

Friday, June 29, 2018

Today we toured the home of George Mason, Gunston Hall, and the Lorton Workhouse which is now a center for arts.  Our Gunston Hall experience really stood out the most, and it was great to see the kids enjoy the different interpretive elements that the docents had put together for them throughout the home.  The students got to engage in interactive discussions and hands-on activities as a way of understanding the dynamics of colonial life during the time of George Mason.  One of the fun parts for me as a teacher was to see them try their skills at deportment, the act of purposeful body stances when representing one’s reactions or background.  Needless to say, the kids had a lot of fun with it!  To close out our busy first week, we wrapped up with a campfire, complete with s’mores and lightning bugs. I think it is safe to say that we are all excited about how this love for History has brought us together.
